The University of Oklahoma’s Master of Arts in Museum Studies is a cutting-edge, advanced program designed to meet the needs of today’s museum professionals. The 33-hour, 100% online program is flexible, affordable, and designed to meet the needs of working adults.

“As new technologies develop and museums are faced with new ways to display their collections, museum professionals are tasked with the challenge to keep up,” said Steve Gullberg, lead faculty for the OU Extended Campus School of Integrative and Cultural Studies. “That’s why we are proud to be home to one of the very few degrees in the nation to offer comprehensive education for museum operation.”

The program’s broad curriculum was created to help students solve real-world problems, covering relevant topics like museum management, budget administration, exhibit and educational programming, and community interaction. Students learn from world-class faculty drawn from museums across the country, including two AAM-accredited museums located on the OU campus – the Sam Noble Oklahoma Museum of Natural History and the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art.

In addition to earning a degree from an accredited, top-ranked university, students leave fully prepared for a career in the museum field.

“I was able to use the real-world application more than I thought I would. It’s amazing what you’re able to accomplish when you love the subject matter,” said Jolie Johnson, a 2011 MAMS graduate who is now the marketing and membership manager for the Paul and Lulu Hilliard University Art Museum in Lafayette, Louisiana. “School didn’t feel like a chore, and work still doesn’t feel that way.”

The Master of Arts in Museum Studies can serve as an important step in a career change or career advancement in the museum industry. All courses are 16 weeks long. An advisor can help you select the number of credit hours you take each semester, as well as what courses are most relevant to your goals and interests.
